Opening for Daniel Caesar’s Superpowers World Tour in San Diego was none other than the talented Orion Sun. Although Orion Sun is a fairly big artist with over 3 million monthly listeners, she is still fairly one of those hidden gem artists. The beautiful lyrics, combined with her warm stage presence and soulful delivery had everyone tuned in, listening and vibing.
The live band did a great job of bringing her studio productions to life. At one point during “No Me Quitte Pas (Don't Leave Me)” she had the whole crowd singing along and it was a beautiful moment. Not only that, but her dance moves were captivating and entertaining. Such a fun watch. Her set ended with a cover of Paramore's "The Only Exception" which was a beautiful, stripped down rendition that the crowd immediately recognized and enjoyed. She gained a lot of new fans that night including myself.
Daniel Caesar is a beloved household name in the R&B community. His hits are certified lovers’ anthems. The energy did not disappoint with the crowd swaying and singing his songs word for word. The best way I can describe his music is almost like a painful bliss, in a good way though. He opened with Ochos Rios, a smooth track that set the tone for the entire night, followed by the heart wrenching hit, Let Me Go. It was a night filled with romance, release, and nostalgia. With how big Daniel Caesar's discography is now, there was something for everyone.
The track, Disillusioned, transitioned the energy from smooth swaying to a unified bounce in the crowd. A groovy track that'll really get you moving regardless if you know the song or not. Toronto 2014 was definitely a highlighted song that transcended everyone's feelings to a higher place. When Cyanide came on the crowd went absolutely wild, reminiscing the year of 2019. Followed by Loose and Violet, the crowd was taken even further back, being reminded of more Daniel Caesar classics from his older catalog. Afterwards, he introduced a newer hit off his most recent album, Do You Like Me, another heart wrenching anthem. Song after song, his set evoked plenty of emotions ranging from serenity to frustration and everything in between. His stage presence was very chill which goes hand in hand with his music. His music really speaks for itself and it’s almost like he could just stand in place and let the crowd sing his whole discography.
Entropy, Open Up, Japanese Denim, Best Part, and Get You had the crowd screaming the lyrics. You could feel the unity of the crowd singing along to their favorite Daniel Caesar classics. Finally, he ended with a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” which was absolutely insane. As if that song wasn’t already painful enough, he really did that. Although it was a big show, it still felt very intimate. Overall a very nostalgic and passionate performance from Daniel Caesar that was very fulfilling for old fans and new fans alike.
